Seed selection and preparation

In the spring, many gardeners are puzzled by such a problem as the right choice of seed material for vegetables. The most convenient for sowing seeds on the tape and dragee seed material.

So that the seeds of carrots and beets quickly sprouted, it is not enough just to purchase the highest quality material. Prior to sowing, it is very important to carry out measures to increase seed germination and accelerate germination, as well as to comply with planting requirements. Presowing preparation of seed material involves several processes.

Soaking and GerminationSoaking is done by placing the seed on a damp cloth
Seed vernalizationSoaking and germination used to prepare very hard seeds
Bubbling SeedsThe method is based on the saturation of the seed with oxygen
Treatment of seed with trace elements and growth stimulantsSoaking in a solution of trace elements or wood ash

If necessary, pelleting of seed material is carried out. FROMThe allowance consists in immersing the seeds in a special protective and nourishing shell, which allows you to increase their size, which greatly facilitates the sowing process.

Soil requirements

Carrots are one of the most demanding planting and growing crops. Stable and high yields of carrots can be obtained when grown only on deeply plowed sandy loamy soils or light loams with a sufficient indicator of fertility. Rows for carrots should be placed on the most even areas. The best predecessors for her are cucumbers, zucchini, cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes and onions.

Beetroot also places high demands on the composition of the soil in the planting area. The soil must have a neutral reaction of the medium. The best for growing table beets are light medium loamy and sandy loam soils rich in organic components.

Beets can be grown on acidic soils only after liming. It should be remembered that excessive application of lime can provoke damage to the vegetable culture by scab.

Very good precursors for beets are any kind of salads, as well as kohlrabi, onions, cauliflower or white cabbage. It is not recommended to plant beets for several years in a row, as well as after carrots, radishes, turnips and radishes.

Beets are often grown in seedlings, but direct sowing in open ground allows you to get a high-quality root crop. Sowing on ridges is carried out in May, when the soil warms up to a sufficient depth. You can also plant this healthy and tasty root crop in the winter, around the end of October or the first decade of November.
